SUNSHINE's first seminar of the fall kicks off with Dr. Deb Niemeier on Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 12 - 1 PM in the Friedgen Lounge (Zoom available).
Dr. Deb Niemeier is the Clark Distinguished Chair in Energy and Sustainability at the University of Maryland, College Park, and a professor in the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering and affiliate professor in the College of Information Studies.
About Dr. Niemeier's seminar:
The intersection of engineering and public health is often seen as primarily one of technology, but there are other facets of engineering that can contribute to advancing our understanding of public health issues. In this talk, I’ll review a few past projects and a few new projects that are currently underway at the intersection of public health and engineering. In the talk, I’ll provide an overview of different projects where transportation engineering is at the intersection of public health and how transportation systems affect population health. This work at the intersection of transportation engineering and public health, uses emerging data, technology, and systems engineering to understand how transportation environments shape population health and to design interventions that make communities safer, healthier, and more accessible.
