Postdoctoral Scholar Position Available Community Action Research for Equity (CARE) Study

The University of California, San Francisco is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar for a multi-year position beginning August or September 2026. The scholar will work with Dr. Jennifer James and play a leading role in a large NIH-funded grant on the healthcare and decision making for incarcerated patients in the hospital setting. The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers, students, clinicians, and community members dedicated to conducting innovative, collaborative research. We seek a postdoc who has a strong interest in ethics and social justice, a passion for equity-driven research, and a commitment to interrogating systems of power and oppression. The funded project is a multi-year institutional ethnography, which will require exceptional qualitative research skills and an interest in participatory action research. There will be ample opportunities to first author publications as well as mentorship and career development support from the PI and investigator team.

Eligibility

Position Qualifications

PhD in the social sciences (e.g., sociology, anthropology, bioethics, ethnic studies)
Advanced qualitative methods skills including: Ethnography, interviews, focus groups, analysis, and writing
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in fast-paced, team-based research environment
Strong organizational skills and attention to details to manage multiple study aims and deadlines
Passion and excitement for ethnographic field work, community-based research, and collaboration with team members of varied research experience.
This position requires residence in the San Francisco Bay Area and the ability to conduct research onsite in San Francisco. Due to the ethnographic nature of the project, there is no flexibility on the residency requirement.
