Description

Program Activities

  • Participate in an aging-related research project at UC and receive mentorship from a faculty member with aging-related research expertise.
    • To select a primary mentor, please see our NIA T32 faculty list on the website or found here. You can also identify a mentorship team. This can be discussed in your personal statement.
    • Many trainees work on projects, papers, and grant-writing with their mentors, often co-authoring conference presentations and manuscripts.
  • Complete quarterly learning plans and program evaluation surveys.
  • Regularly attend the Demography Workshop and Postmortem Seminar, Thursdays 12:30-2:30PM
    • Trainees are also expected to present at least once during their appointment period at the Demography Workshop.
    • Serve as a postdoctoral fellow supporting the Demography Workshop for one quarter, working closely with the faculty leading the workshop to facilitate sessions and support workshop activities.
  • Participate in other interdisciplinary workshops at UC organized by T32 mentors. These include:
  • Present research at aging-related conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals
    • All postdocs will be expected to submit one aging-related abstract per appointment year to a national conference such as the annual meeting of the Population Association of America (PAA) and develop at least one first-author paper for peer-review during their postdoctoral training period.
    • All trainees can request funds from the training program to support travel to professional meetings at which they present work on the demography and economics of aging.
  • Option to participate in an interdisciplinary summer coursework on aging, health, and real-world data
    • This optional coursework may help trainees meet peers and prospective mentors in aging research from across disciplines and increase exposure to a wide range of topics and viewpoints in aging.
    • Summer Program in Outcomes Research Training (SPORT): SPORT is a 7-week program comprising 2 courses and 3 workshop series that provides postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows, residents, and junior faculty (MDs) with training in outcomes research. Trainees will have the opportunity to participate in SPORT to learn how to apply demographic and economic methods to health services research, hone their quantitative skills, and gain hands on experience using real-world data sets.
