Abstract

Impact of Hurricanes on Treatment for Stroke Among Older Americans

R J. Waken, PhD, Instructor of Biostatistics, WashU Medicine Institute for Informatics, Data Science and Biostatistics (I2DB)

This project uses national Medicare data linked with geographic data on hurricanes to examine the association between major weather events and the economics of stroke care. It will test the hypothesis that the delayed availability of care during major disasters changes access to care for people with incident stroke, leading to poorer health outcomes and ultimately higher healthcare costs.
