Associations of cognitive impairment and health-related factors with Medicare Advantage enrollment in older adults

Currently covering half of the U.S. older adults, Medicare Advantage (MA) has become an important aspect of healthcare for this population, including many living with ADRD or mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Before we can assess how MA addresses their complex care needs, it is critical to understand who enrolls in MA, which may be endogenously related to health/healthcare outcomes. However, beyond demographic patterns, little is known on factors related to MA enrollment. This pilot study aims to (1) examine how cognitive impairment and other health and behavioral factors are associated with MA enrollment, and (2) explore potential heterogeneity in enrollment choice across demographic subgroups. We will leverage extensive information collected from cohorts at the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center, linked with Medicare data. Findings may enhance understanding of selection into MA and inform future research on healthcare delivery in MA for those with ADRD/MCI.
